A little about Davis Porch Swings
In a small Pennsylvania town we call Hangtown, around the year 2000, my father started making the first swings. He established what would be our main swing pattern. These swings he made primarily for family and friends over the course of the next couple years. One of those original swings can still be seen today looking a little weathered in the background. Eventually, my father got busy with work and family and had less time for woodworking.
As a teen, with my father busy working, I started helping build porch swings and gliders along side my uncle and grandfather. It was during this time (2006-2009) I learned many skills and found my passion for woodworking. I thoroughly enjoyed the craft as well as the appreciation on the faces of those customers, who would become a little part of my life.
As I neared graduation from high school, spending more time with friends and family, woodworking was something I had less time for. However, I still took any opportunity to build or get involved in construction projects, I just loved to learn and work with my hands. In 2011, sadly my father passed away and that took a lot of wind from my sails as you might expect. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do anymore. I tried many different things for jobs but none really took my interest.
Getting back to my roots, I took a look back at woodworking. It was then I decided to bring swing building right back to the Davis house, where in 2015 I started woodworking on my own. During this time, I mostly made treated wood swings but I eventually added the American Flag Swings, along side many other custom woodworking projects. For the next four years, I continued woodworking, calling my new hobby/side gig Hangtown Swings and Things. As my passion and hobby grew, I was driven by the support of my Mom and family to, in 2019, create my own small business. Davis Porch Swings was born.
The following year was a huge challenge! In 2020-2021 the global pandemic wrecked havoc on life was we knew it. Prices of many things, including lumber and materials went through the roof. At many times treated wood was no where to be found. I also lost another of my biggest supporters and inspirations in my grandfather. Through it all and in memory of those who inspired me, Davis Porch Swings still had it's most successful year yet making close to 50 swings and adding a new hit, the shooting benches!
With the help and support of many, Davis Porch Swings continues to grow! I've recently dove a little more into Poly Wood adding some new swings and even some custom creations. This year, I've also started offering shipping for the shooting benches, we have shooting benches in 11 States now!! Hopefully soon I'll be able to work out shipping our swings. I'm so excited to share my passion with everyone! Here's to many more years and many new faces! Thank you all so much!! - Riley Davis
